About Me

My name is Shyam Chandarana. I graduated recently from the University of Cambridge with a bachelors degree in mathematics. I have been tutoring since 2022, with students of all abilities. Having taken STEP myself, and working to support students taking the exam since, I am very experienced with this exam, and the techniques and skills needed to succeed.

My Approach

When should I start problem solving sessions? Generally, I recommend students start these sessions no earlier than the summer before Year 12. Starting after this is not a problem – these sessions are about boosting your problem solving ability within the time we have. If you are not yet at this point, you would be better suited to supercurrciular extension sessions.

Timing, Frequency, and Logistics

For problem solving sessions, I recommend 60 or 90 minute sessions once every two weeks. To ensure students have time to look at the problems I set in advance of and at the end of the session, and that their schoolwork for A-Levels is not detrimentally affected, I do not recommend that sessions are any more frequent than this.

Most sessions take place virtually on Whereby, an online video conferencing platform. You will need a graphics tablet to be able to write on. Onboarding Process
  1. Book a free consultation session – both the student and their parent/guardian should ideally be present; we will discuss your goals and the best approach for you
  2. I will send some problems for the student to attempt and return to be marked – this serves as a diagnostic for me to gauge their ability
  3. Discounted first session – 60 minutes
  4. If the student and parent/guardian think we are a good fit, we will discuss what frequency and duration of lessons will work best and arrange a regular slot for lessons
