About Me

My name is Shyam Chandarana. I graduated recently from the University of Cambridge with a bachelors degree in mathematics. I have been tutoring since 2022, with students of all abilities. My skills lie in adapting my approach to suit the needs of students, whether they are to consolidate and achieve a passing grade, or to push themselves to the highest grade.

My Approach

For students who need additional help to reach a passing grade (4 at GCSE, E at A Level), sessions will focus on individual concepts – time is taken to review each concept, then problems are worked through to highlight any areas of understanding. These are consolidated with a short set of problems students take away and work on, which are reviewed at the beginning of the next session.

For students who need additional help to reach a good grade (6 at GCSE, C at A Level), the level of confidence will often vary a lot between areas of the syllabus. For each lesson, a set of problems will be provided in advance, to identify the level at which the student is working. Depending on how they have dealt with these problems, time will then be spent reviewing concepts, then the problems will be used as the basis of further discussion. Extension material will be provided if time remains.

For students, who need additional help to reach top grades, I will provide problems to work on before each session. These ramp up in difficulty and it is not expected that students will be able to solve them all. The problems then form the basis of the discussion in the lesson, with additional material to stretch the student further if necessary. This replicates the style of an Oxbridge supervision/tutorial.

For students already working at top grades, you may be better suited to supercuricular extension sessions to stretch and challenge beyond the scope of your school course.

Lesson Details

Sessions for GCSE and A Level last one hour.

For most students, it is best to have lessons once a week. During school holidays, sessions can be continued or paused at your discretion.

For A Level students, we can discuss increasing to two sessions per week. For GCSE students, this is usually not in their best interest, due to the number of other subjects being studied. If you have particular circumstances, these can be discussed on an individual basis.

Particularly for students who are seeking support to reach the highest grades, one lesson each fortnight may be better to ensure our work does not detrimentally affect success in other subjects. This can be discussed on an individual basis in your free consultation session.

Most of my sessions take place online, using Whereby. Technology requirements will be discussed in your free consultation session. In-person sessions may be available in the Greater London area. This can also be discussed in your free consultation session – please provide your postcode in the comments field when booking.

Getting Started

To get started with tuition:

  1. Book a free consultation session – both the student and their parent/guardian should be present; we will discuss your goals and the best approach for you
  2. I will send some questions for the student to attempt and return to be marked – this serves as a diagnostic for me to gauge their ability
  3. Discounted first session on a topic of the student’s choice
  4. If the student and parent/guardian think we are a good fit, we will arrange a regular slot for lessons
